The English Department aims to provide a stimulating, dynamic and academically rigorous experience for all our students. To this end, we are dedicated to leading innovation within English and Media teaching and to forging strong links with other departments.
The English Department is proud of the achievement of its students, and we are committed to fostering a love of our subject through the enthusiasm and expertise of our staff. At the heart of our curriculum is an emphasis on creativity, independence and critical thinking. We place a high value on each student's personal response.
A Culture of Reading
We are fortunate to have an outstanding LRC which allows pupils access to the latest fiction, but one which is also filled with additional resources for all subjects. We aim to foster a true love of reading, with half-termly book swaps and reading competitions. The LRC is a welcoming and inspirational place for anyone who wants to get lost in the world of a book. For further information see our Library page.
Extra-curricular
We also try to foster a culture where we encourage students to experience different aspects of English: with trips to the theatre, to see An Inspector Calls, the cinema to watch productions from the National Theatre Live and having authors in to both inspire students to read and write.
We also run a number of extra-curricular clubs, including creative writing and the Barnet News club, as well as taking part in World Book Day and National Poetry Day.
